Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the California DREAM Act Tuesday night for the second time in two years, barring hundreds of undocumented UC students from scholarships and university funding.

In light of this most recent veto I think it is relevant to discuss the national DREAM Act and the debate surrounding it:

I thought this was an interesting interview. I wasn’t aware of the military provision in the DREAM act or the Pentagon’s hand in it until I watched this episode back in August. I think it’s great that many people such as Gabriela are able to take advantage of the Act and I’m sure many more can and will. But I agree with Carlos Mejia that it really isn’t a fair choice when joining the military is financially more attractive.
Jose’s comment that people who are willing to go to war “love it” also struck me. What is there to love about war? In an interview a couple of years ago, Carlos shared how US soldiers were trained to dehumanize the enemy, to treat them like animals, and performed mocked executions. ? It made me think about our lectures on whether humans are naturally violent and warlike.
It's interesting to me that this component of the dream is not very much talked about at all. Whenever we hear about the Dream Act, all the emphasis is the on the higher education component. This kind of invisibilization of the military complex is very frightening. It's insidious nature comes from the fact that it has found a way to slip a means that funnels vulnerable youth of color into the military into what is otherwise a very progressive/socially just act.
I also wonder if the Dream Act has more or less of a chance of being passed one day because of this component (both in terms of popular support and in terms of support among legislators).
I agree that the options are unattractive and not viable for some people who do not find either option appealing, I think there should be more options, such as offering the same benefits if the student/person attends a vocational school, because it is a major portion that is missing, that said hopefully it passes on saturday
"Votes on those measures, a leadership aide told The Huffington Post, would now come on Saturday morning. DREAM will go first, followed by DADT. The former has, it is believed, less of a shot at passage than the latter,"
